Following the passage of the 18th amendment two years ago, in 1920, that banned the production and sale of alcoholic beverages, our society has rapidly changed.
Due to this amendment, society has been adapting faster than we would have earlier deemed possible, with underground breweries and mobs springing up almost in the blink of an eye.
This movement began in the south, due to the high amount of devout Christians located there. They slowly pushed this message throughout the country, creating a highly secretive and deceptive society.
The prohibition of alcohol has also increased adultery. When a man and woman become partners in crime with alcohol, they are more likely to be partners in bed. Another negative effect of the passage of this amendment is disrespect for the law and for the church. When one law is deemed incredulous and unnecessary by the population, it causes the government as a whole loses respect.
Another effect is a rise in the power of people in the medical field. Whiskey can still be prescribed by doctors, so the amount of “sick” people we have in our society has dramatically increased.
One thing prohibition has not done is decrease alcohol consumption, which was its main goal. This author hopes that this amendment will be repealed soon, but until then, society will continue to change based on this new law.
